Supporting Sustainable Livelihoods: KAEME Partners With ACA in Juaso on Black Soap Production

Accra, Ghana — 02 November, 2024
KAEME is happy to announce a partnership with Advocates for Community Alternatives (ACA), which has been supporting the Juaso community since 2020 by offering technical advice on producing black soap.
Located in the Eastern Region of Ghana, the small township is adjacent to Ghana’s treasured Atewa Forest and depends mainly on farming for income. However, gold mining activities in the area have steadily taken over community land, destroying plantations and putting livelihoods at risk.
KAEME’s Initial Meeting With The Juaso Community in 2020
After ACA selected Juaso in August 2020 to identify and pursue a self-determined development vision, its people decided to become “a community with sustainable health, sustainable source of livelihood, security and a reliable source of food for everyone. ”They identified the commercial potential of black soap as a viable avenue to achieve this, and KAEME is proud to have served as a technical advisor for their livelihood improvement project.
“We admire the initiative of the Juaso community, and we’re excited about working together to build their capacity through this ACA-led project,” stated Scholasticah Barimah, KAEME’s Technical lead on this project. “As a small business that puts people over profits, we recognize the value of empowering the people of Juaso to create sustainable incomes and advance their livelihoods. Our partnership will also offer them a ready market and fair prices for their black soap now that production has begun.”
Team Members From KAEME and ACA
KAEME’s work with the Juaso community began with an engagement and preparation period, including meetings with the townspeople and advice on designing and constructing a small factory for black soap production. Subsequent months focused on training in making black soap and good manufacturing processes, followed by support with establishing a consistent production schedule and documenting quality-control processes.
Juaso Diaries, comprising four entries documenting KAEME’s partnership with ACA, celebrates the hard work and dedication of the Juaso community to change their fortunes despite the threat gold mining poses to their sustenance. Beginning. An entry from the series will be posted monthly on KAEME’s website and via social media.
